PARA POWERLIFTING:
KEY INFORMATION
Events consists of a single movement: the bench
press. The athlete must lower the bar to their
chest, pause, then press it upwards until their
arms are fully extended.
Athletes are given three attempts and the athlete who
lis the heaviest weight wins. There is no impairment
classification, only body weight categories.
The discipline oicially joined the Paralympic
programme in 1984. Sixteen years later, the
women’s events were introduced at the 2000 Sydney
Paralympics.
All athletes have an impairment in their lower limbs
or hips.
