The Association for Japan-U.S. Community
Exchange (ACE) - Nikaido Fellowship provides
stipends of up to $5,000 to awarded graduate
students, depending on the proposed course of
study. The purpose of the award is to advance
understanding of Japan and/or U.S.-Japan
relations. The award may be used for research,
Japanese language training or Japanese area
studies. The deadline to apply is by 5:00 PM this Friday, February 8, 2019. To apply,
please complete the online application, and view the website for eligibility, a sample
application, samples of previously awarded projects and more information.

Jillian Brandt is a PhD student in the
Department of History and an EASC ACE-
Nikaido Fellow from Summer 2018. Jillian met
with EASC to discuss how the ACE-Nikaido
fellowship impacted her research for her

by Dr. Jeannie Kenmotsu, Assistant Curator
of Japanese Art at Portland Oregon Museum,
is this Thursday in MRF 340 from 4:00-5:30PM. Her lecture explores the lesser known
contours of collecting Japanese art on the west coast. It reframes the story of early print
collecting in the U.S. through an alternative but nonetheless foundational case study: an
early donation of nearly 750 Edo-period (1603-1868) woodblock prints to the Portland Art
Museum, Oregon. We look forward to seeing you there!

Professor of History at the University of California, San Diego, on Tuesday, February 19,
2019. Simeon will present on his first book, Soldiering through Empire: Race and Making of
the Decolonizing Pacific (University of California Press, 2018), as well as his forthcoming
article in the Radical History Review, "Militarism and Capitalism: The Work and Wages of

archives, securing funding for research and developing academic and professional
networks. The Grad Professionalization Series is sponsored and organized by the Center for
International Studies, East Asian Studies Center, and Korean Studies Institute.

As a reminder, Duncan Williams will speak
about his new book American Sutra: A Story of
Faith and Freedom During the Second World
War (Harvard University Press, Feb. 2019) on the Japanese American Buddhist experience
in the WWII incarceration camps. He will explore questions of faith, identity and resilience in
the face of dislocation, loss and uncertainty. Following his talk, Williams will be in
conversation with USC Dean of Religious Life and Vice-Provost, Varun Soni, to discuss how
the past might inform the current national conversations about race, religion and American

East Asia Career Panel - USC
Career Fest 2019
Last Tuesday, USC undergraduates and
graduates attended the 7th Annual East Asia
Career Panel as part of USC Career Fest
2019. They had the opportunity to network with
our amazing EASC panelists who work in
diverse fields such as entertainment, real
estate investment, theme parks and the food
industry. They discussed how they leveraged their East Asian languages and area studies
skills and study abroad experiences to help secure their current positions and how they
continue to these skills and experiences in their careers. You can view more photos from the

Global Justice, Equity and Empowerment

The UCLA International Institute presents the 6th Annual Going Global Graduate Student
Conference on April 19, 2019 at UCLA. The conference theme is on Global Justice, Equity,
and Empowerment: Understanding and Enacting Social Change. Panel topics may include
analyzing movements and vectors of social changes through various perspectives such as
addressing gender inequities, enacting social change through visual collectives, international
relations and regional inequity and more. Interested students can learn more and apply here.

The Georgetown Journal of Asian Affairs is currently accepting research manuscripts for
Volume 5 (Summer 2019). They welcome original social science research papers written on
issues relevant to politics, security, economy, culture and society of contemporary Asia,
including Pakistan and Afghanistan. Their publication highlights the works of young scholars
alongside those of well-established experts, providing a valuable opportunity for graduate
