ASCAP MEMBER ACHIEVEMENTS IN 2021
ASCAP members gave us music with
the most heart, soul and impact in 2021.
From the very rst #1 song of 2021 (Mariah Carey & Walter
Afanasie’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You”) to the single that
dominated December (Adeles “Easy on Me,” co-written and
produced by Greg Kurstin), ASCAP members were behind the
world’s most popular, impactful music throughout the year.
ASCAP members inspired us to sing and dance, think and feel
in 2021. Their music kept us connected when we couldn’t be
together, and gave us hope when we most needed it. They
showed that music can make a dierence.
Here are some of the many milestones that our ASCAP family
achieved in 2021, another culture-dening year for the 850,000
songwriters, composers and publishers we represent.

ASCAP Shirley Walker Award winner Germaine
Franco is one of few women working full-time in
Hollywood as a composer and music producer for
lm, TV and interactive media. She gained critical
acclaim in 2018 with her work on Pixar’s much-
beloved Coco, co-orchestrating the score, and
co-writing and producing ve original songs with
screenwriter and co-director Adrian Molina. Fast
forward three years, and Franco is in high demand
for her colorful orchestrations and unmatched
ability to provide an authentic Latinx sound.
2021 found her scoring another smash-hit family
lm, Encanto, Disney’s animated musical about a
magical family in an enchanted Colombian oasis.
Francos vibrant score, coupled with Lin-Manuel
Miranda’s songs, denitely struck a chord with
kids and parents alike. The Encanto soundtrack hit
#1 on the Billboard 200 chart in January, the rst
animated soundtrack to top the charts in three
years. With more projects in the works, Germaine
Franco is building a powerful and exciting legacy in
the world of screen music.

2021 was the season of Summer Walker. She
splashed onto the scene in 2018 with her excellent
mixtape Last Day of Summer, and went even
bigger for her debut album, Over It, which set
a record for the biggest streaming debut week
ever for a female R&B artist. Not to be outdone
in 2021, Walker had her most explosive year yet.
Her sophomore album Still Over It debuted at
#1 on the Billboard 200, and sent an incredible
18 songs onto the Hot 100 simultaneously
making Walker the only woman besides Taylor
Swift with that many chart entries at the same
time. Still Over It was the rst R&B album by a
woman to top the album charts since Solanges A
Seat at the Table in 2016. To top it o, Still Over It
set the record for the best-ever R&B album debut
on Apple Music and became the streaming
services biggest-ever release by a woman in any
genre. Summer Walker does it bigger and better
with every release, and we can’t wait to see what
the future holds for this R&B superstar.

2021 was an unforgettable year for rising superstar
Olivia Rodrigo. Already well known as an actress,
she ascended to pop royalty with “drivers license,”
her earnest heartbreak ballad that rocketed to
record-breaking success. When the song topped
the Hot 100, it made the then 17-year-old Rodrigo
the youngest artist ever to debut atop the chart,
and introduced a singer-songwriter to be reckoned
with. The quadruple-platinum song spent eight
consecutive weeks at #1. When her debut album
SOUR dropped in May 2021, accompanied by four
straight top 10 singles, it was clear that Olivia Rodrigo
had made something magical. Written amidst the
isolation of the pandemic with producer Dan Nigro,
SOUR is a rollicking romp through the heartaches
of youth. The album cemented Rodrigo as a new
household name, and netted her seven GRAMMY
nominations, a visit to The White House and the top
spot on Billboards year-end Hot 100 Songwriters
chart. With her pick of new collaborators and a
sold-out spring tour on the books, Olivia Rodrigo
shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon.

In a town built on songs, country songwriter
Josh Osborne is undoubtedly one of Nashvilles
master craftsmen. Some 40 songs were
released in 2021 that bore his imprint as a writer
and/or producer, including superb singles by
Carly Pearce, Old Dominion, Midland, Sam
Hunt and Darius Rucker. He was nominated for
Songwriter of the Year at the ACMs and Album
of the Year at the CMAs (for Carly Pearces 29),
and was named MusicRow’s CountryBreakout
Songwriter of the Year, a feat he repeated in
2022. Proving that a great song is a great song,
regardless of genre, Osborne also took home
a whopping 13 ASCAP awards at our Pop and
Country Music Awards, including his rst ever
ASCAP Songwriter of the Year honor. While
Josh Osbornes résumé of #1 country hits
stretches back a decade now, 2021 may go
down as his biggest year yet.
Composer and mentor Tania Léon has never stopped
moving forward. Soon after immigrating to New York
from Havana, Cuba in 1967, Léon established the music
school at the Dance Theater of Harlem. She initiated
the Brooklyn Philharmonic Community Concert series
and co-founded the Sonidos de las Américas Festivals,
has advised and conducted major orchestras around the
world, earned countless honors and commissions, and
helms the advocacy organization Composers Now all the
while holding down professorships at the Conservatory
of Music at Brooklyn College and CUNY. In 2021 came
another major milestone: just one week after she joined
The ASCAP Foundation Board, Léon won the Pulitzer
Prize for her thrilling orchestral work “Stride,” a tribute
to pioneering suragist Susan B. Anthony. It was a tting
coda for a work composed by another boundary-breaking
woman; more than half a century into her illustrious career,
Léon continues to move American culture forward.

Celebrated Tony Award-winning composer Jeanine
Tesori had a standing ovation-worthy year in 2021. The
woman behind the music of shows like Thoroughly
Modern Millie, Shrek the Musical, Soft Power and the
ve-time Tony Award winner Fun Home, Tesori has
made a name for herself as an innovative emotional
powerhouse of a composer. Her latest o-broadway
smash, Kimberly Akimbo, dazzled audiences at Atlantic
Theater Company in 2021 and is sure to migrate
to Broadway. Her celebrated musical Caroline or
Change revived to rave reviews at The Roundabout
Theater Company. She also worked her magic as a
development music consultant and supervising vocal
producer on Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story lm
remake, drawing on over 25 years of experience in
musical theater composition. Tesori continues to create
exciting and evocative music to light up the stage (and
screen) and is certainly one of the great musical theater
creators setting the stage for the future on Broadway
and beyond.

Colombian singer Camilo had a breakout year for
the books in 2021. His name trended all across Latin
music Twitter and IG (check his whopping 25.6 million
Instagram followers), thanks to an unending stream of
top-shelf, top 5 Latin pop singles like “Millones” and
“Índigo,” and his wonderfully optimistic presence on
social media. This mustachioed troubadour earned 10
Latin GRAMMY nominations and won four of them,
including Best Pop Vocal Album for his generously-
praised debut Mis Manos, featuring collaborations
with his wife Evaluna Montaner, his brothers-in-law
Mau y Ricky, El Alfa and more; Mis Manos is also up
for a 2022 GRAMMY for Best Latin Pop Album. He also
reached across the English/Spanish divide in 2021, with
high-prole collabs with Selena Gomez (“999”) and
Shawn Mendes (“Kesi”). In a Latin music market where
reggaetón and trap hold a lot of commercial power,
Camilo has taken the spotlight with his swooning
acoustic pop balladry. He continues to make waves in
the global music industry and fans around the world
are falling in love.

LEGACIES OF GREATNESS
ASCAP LEGENDS CITED FOR THEIR LIVES IN MUSIC
The announcement that composer and saxophonist/
utist Henry Threadgill would receive an NEA Jazz
Masters Fellowship in 2021 came as little surprise
to the legions of colleagues and admirers that he
has inuenced over his 50+ year career. Threadgill
made a name for himself as a founding member of
the Association for the Advancement of Creative
Musicians (AACM), the legendary Chicago group that
has nurtured many of the great names in avant-garde
jazz since the mid-’60s. Since then hes earned great
acclaim for boldly exploring the limits of composition,
improvisation, musicianship and the space where
all three meet. With a Pulitzer Prize, Guggenheim
Fellowship, Aaron Copland Award, the Vietnam
Veterans of Americas Excellence in the Arts Award,
and induction onto the ASCAP Jazz Wall of Fame all
on his professional CV (among many other accolades),
Threadgill has long since proven that he is one of the
most vital and respected composer-musicians in jazz.
The NEA Jazz Masters honor is a welcome reminder of
his incredible legacy, one that he is still writing today.
