oversimplificationthatprovideshumanswithamessagethattheywishtohear.
2.1ThePlaceoftheOldTestament
PerhapsevenmoresothantheNewTestament,theOldTestamenthasauniquecapacity
tospeakinreferencetolivesofcommunitiesandindividuals.
Whileitisunderstoodthatthe

centralthemeintheNewTestamentisJesusChristandhisresurrection,thereisnosuch
agreementastothecentralthematicoftheOldTestament.
Ingeneral,itcanbestatedthatthere

isageneralavoidanceoftheOldTestamentbyeventhemostdevoutfollowersofChristianity.
AccordingtoPeels,
ThewayinwhichtheOldtestamentspeaksaboutGodmaybealienandevenfrightening
totheaveragereaderoftheBible.TheGodwhohideshimselfinanger,executesrevenge,
andwhoinjealousyoutpourswrathandjudgementWhoishe?CanthisGodbetrusted?
Thesearequestionsthatnotonlyraisetheologicalproblems,butalsotouchtheheartof our
faithandexperience.

TheresultofthisphenomenonhasbeenwhatDyrnessdescribedastypicalChristianstudytime.
UnderthetypicalChristianstudyingprocess,theOldTestamentisgenerallyonlyconsultedon
occasionandwhenitis,itusuallyisconfinedtoPsalmsandProverbswithoccasional
considerationofProphets.
