A REAL ID is a drivers license, learner’s

DMV. Starting in October 2020, you

FAQs About REAL and Enhanced IDs:
What is an Enhanced ID?
An Enhanced drivers license, learner’s permit,
or non-driver ID is issued by the DMV, and can
be used in lieu of a passport, if coming back to
the country from Mexico, Canada, and some
Caribbean countries, by land and sea only. It will
also be accepted in lieu of a passport on domestic
flights, and in order to enter military bases
and some federal buildings. Passports are still
mandatory on international flights. It costs an
extra $30 on top of normal drivers license fees.
What is the difference?
An Enhanced ID does everything a
REAL ID does, plus it allows you to travel
by land or sea to Mexico, Canada, and some
Caribbean countries.
Do I have to get
a REAL or Enhanced ID?
No, you do not. Just make sure you have a
valid passport, in order to board all flights,
enter military buildings, and some federal
buildings. You do not have to be a citizen in
order to get a Real ID, however you must be
a citizen to get an Enhanced ID.
How can I apply for
a REAL or Enhanced ID?
You must apply for a REAL or Enhanced
ID in person, at a DMV office.
